List on eBay by UPC, Even When eBay Finds No Product

We scanned the same UPC into eBay's listing tool and into Rilk. On three popular products eBay found no catalog product; Rilk found each in under 3 seconds.

You can list on eBay from a UPC even when eBay's own listing tool finds no product for it. We scanned the same barcode into eBay's listing tool and into Rilk on two phones, side by side. On three popular products eBay's tool offered no catalog product to list from. Rilk found each one in under 3 seconds.

Why does eBay's listing tool come back empty on a UPC?

eBay's tool matches a barcode to its product catalog only after you pick a category, and for many products that match never comes. You type the UPC, it asks for a category, and then either the product shows up or it doesn't. When it doesn't, you type the title, brand and item specifics by hand for something eBay has listed a thousand times.

What happened on the three products?

Owala FreeSip 24 oz. eBay's tool found nothing and went straight to “select the condition of your item”. Rilk had the catalog product in 2.8 seconds, with the photo.

Apple AirTag 4-pack and JBL Flip 6. eBay's tool showed “related listings from other sellers”: other people's listings, not a product to list from. Rilk found the catalog product for each in under 3 seconds.

We also picked the right category by hand instead of taking eBay's suggestion. Same result: no product from eBay's library for any of the three.

How does Rilk find the product when eBay doesn't?

When eBay's catalog search has no match for a barcode, Rilk keeps going. It checks live eBay listings for that exact UPC and follows them to the catalog product they belong to. You start from the product, with its title, photos, brand and item specifics, instead of a blank form.

What else shows up with the result?

Each result comes with the product's photo, and its eBay reviews where it has them. On a phone there's a scan button, so you point the camera at the barcode instead of typing it. Pick the result and Rilk creates the product with the catalog details filled in, ready to list.
